Myth busting time: Get the real picture behind the mask

With the world going gaga (no reference to the popular singer by the same name) over social media, more and more companies and individuals are jumping on to the bandwagon to have their share of the frenzy. Let’s face it, social media is happening. Right here. Right now. And, no matter what the skeptics say, social media works!

All said and done, why is it then that there are hundreds of thousands of people out there who are yet to experience the magic of social media for their business? They are leaving no stone unturned – from frantic tweeting (Twitter) to delirious posting on walls (Facebook) to frenzied joining of other groups and networks (LinkedIn). But the response remains cold, at best lukewarm.

Are they getting something wrong here?

Probably yes. This is because there are still some myths surrounding social media and how it works that are preventing people from taking full advantage of this exciting medium. Here are 6 of them to make you start thinking afresh about your social media efforts.

1. Social media is so easy that anybody can do it: Well, yes and no. While most social media services have kept their operations very simple and intuitive in order to encourage more users to subscribe to them, leveraging those features to market a business is a different ball game. You need someone who’s really capable of using social media to build your online reputation and credibility, and take you towards your goal. Don’t hire an intern to do it. Remember, the person who will be executing the social media activities is the public face of your company. So, you’ll probably want to be a bit careful about who gets that responsibility.

2. Social media marketing is really hard: This is the other extreme, only untrue. Sure there are techniques to be learnt, strategies to be devised and common mistakes to be avoided, but in the end, it’s all about maintaining contact with others and communicating. If you are creative, curious and articulate, cracking the social media nut shouldn’t be too difficult for you. After all, it’s no rocket science!

3. I’m too old for social media: Wrong again! Did you know that the largest user base on Facebook, the numero uno social media platform, is aged between 35 and 54? To be frank, age is quite a trivial factor as far as social media goes. As long as you have something interesting to share with others, you’re in. And age does have the advantage of experience. Let me see the young crowd top that!

All said and done, it helps to hire a professional Social Media Marketing company for the job. Of course you can do everything by yourself but seriously, do you have the time for all that? (And that’s another bonus myth to bust for you, viz. “I can do it all by myself”) Get a specialist on the job and create social media magic. It’s much easier that way.
